Mahjong unblocked: play Mahjong online free right here in your browser — no download, no sign-up, works on a school Chromebook.

This Mahjong is a solitaire tile-matching game, not the four-player table game. A layout of stacked tiles sits on the board, and you clear it by removing matching pairs until nothing is left. The build loaded here is the open-source "Mah" project by ffalt, so it has no ads of its own inside the frame, and it keeps your best times in your browser.

On Cat Ninja the hero game is all reflexes. Mahjong is the opposite pace: there is no enemy and no rush, only a pile of tiles and the question of which pair to take first.

How to play

Click or tap a tile to select it, then click a second tile with the same face to remove both. A tile can only be taken when it is free: nothing may lie on top of it, and its left or right side must be open. A tile squeezed between two neighbours on the same row stays locked until one of them is gone.

  • Stones / Free: the bar at the top counts the tiles still on the board and how many of them are free right now.
  • Hint: shows a pair you can take. Use it when you are stuck rather than clicking at random.
  • Undo: puts the last pair back. You can step back several moves, which is the main way out of a dead end.
  • New Game: opens the board picker. Choose a layout and press Start Selected, or press Start Random.

When no free pair remains the game tells you there are no more matching tiles; undo a few moves or start again. Clearing the whole layout shows "Well done!", and a faster clear than before is saved as a new best time for that board.

Keyboard shortcuts

The game listens for a few letter keys, which is handy on a laptop: T for a hint, U to undo, N for a new game, P or Space to pause and resume, H for help, I for the tile guide and S for settings. Esc closes whichever dialog is open.

Layouts and settings

There are fifty-five layouts in this build, from the classic Turtle, Dragon and Fly to shapes such as Pikachu, London Bridge, Three Pyramids and Snowflake. Some are flat, others stack tiles up to five layers high, and the tall ones hide more tiles under others, so they need more planning.

Settings decide how the tiles are dealt. Solvable deals a random board that has at least one way to clear it. Linear builds the board backwards, so it can always be cleared, but experienced players may find it easy. Random is a pure shuffle that may have no solution at all. You can also swap the tile art (Classic, Riichi, Fruits and a few more), pick a background such as Bamboo or Wood Table, turn on higher contrast, and switch the menus between English, German, Dutch and Portuguese.

Tips for clearing the board

  1. Work on tall stacks first. Tiles buried under several layers are the ones that end games. Free the top of the highest pile early.
  2. Open long rows from the ends. A long row only frees tiles at its two ends, so take end tiles when you have a choice.
  3. Look before you take a pair. If three or four copies of one face are free, choose the pair that unlocks the most tiles beneath or beside it.
  4. Season and flower tiles match within their group. Any season matches any other season, and any flower matches any flower. The tile guide (I) shows every face, from the Circles, Bamboo and Characters suits to winds and dragons.

Questions about Mahjong

Is Mahjong unblocked at school?

Mahjong runs in an ordinary browser tab from catninja.co, with nothing to download or install, so it plays on most school Chromebooks and work computers. If a network filter blocks the site, only that network's administrator can change it.

Which Mahjong tiles can I remove?

Only free tiles: nothing on top, and an open left or right side. Pick two free tiles with the same face to take them off the board.

Is every Mahjong board solvable?

It depends on the deal setting. Solvable and Linear always leave a way to clear the board; Random is a pure shuffle and can be impossible.

What are the keyboard shortcuts?

T shows a hint, U undoes the last move, N starts a new game and P or Space pauses. H opens help and Esc closes a dialog.
